In an exchange session titled “University Spin-offs: Venture Capital Perspectives and Case Studies” on 22 August, ITPR invited Mr Fred Li, Senior Executive Director of Gobi Partners GBA to share valuable insights with scholars and HKBU spin-offs on turning academic innovations to commercial success.
During the panel discussion moderated by Mr Raymond Chan, Assistant Director (Entrepreneurship) of ITPR, Mr Li highlighted the importance of understanding investors’ concerns, exploring and offering one’s unique value proposition, building a complementary and skilled team, and possessing deep knowledge of the market landscape and competitors. Further elaborations with some successful case studies provided participants with enlightening perspectives. As a corporate which has invested over HK$400 million in Hong Kong university-related ventures, Gobi Partners GBA would keen on supporting the commercialisation of academic innovations.
ITPR is eager to provide first-hand knowledge of investors and venture capitals on their decision-making as well as the funding landscape. This sharing session serves to support the University scholars and spin-offs with practical knowledge to facilitate knowledge transfer and commercialisation, and thus to bridge the gap between academia and industry.
