ITPR’s sharing session on “University Spin-offs: Venture Capital Perspectives and Case Studies”

19 October, 2024

As part of our efforts to promote entrepreneurship, the Institute for Innovation, Translation and Policy Research (ITPR) invited Mr Tommy Yip, Co-founder & Managing Partner of Unicorn Capital Partners, to share his invaluable insights during the event "Unlocking Financial Wisdom for Deep Tech Startups", which took place on 18 October. He discussed essential strategies and operational insights crucial for the success of HKBU’s deep tech entrepreneurs, startups, and students.

During the exchange, moderated by Mr Raymond Chan, Assistant Director (Entrepreneurship) of ITPR, Mr Yip shared his entrepreneurial journey in co-establishing Unicorn Capital Partners, a fund-of-funds platform that invests at the forefront of emerging technology and innovation. He emphasised that startups should not solely seek financial backing from venture capitalists; resources and expertise from them are equally crucial for success. He advised entrepreneurs to demonstrate their company's potential for scalability and the market’s readiness for growth. For students aspiring to enter this field, he recommended building domain expertise and gaining industry operational experience as foundational steps.

The event concluded with an engaging discussion. We are grateful for Mr. Yip’s support for our startup community, empowering the next generation of entrepreneurs in our community.
