The pioneering innovations of Hong Kong Baptist University (HKBU) in sports science projects were showcased at the Guangdong-Hong Kong Technology Showcase (粵港科技合作成果展) on 20 March 2025 at Hong Kong Convention and Exhibition Centre.
Our booth received visits from distinguished guests, including Mr Wang Weizhong, Governor of Guangdong Province; Mr C.Y. Leung, Vice-Chairman of the National Committee of the Chinese People’s Political Consultative Conference; Mr Zheng Yanxiong, Director of the Liaison Office of the Central People's Government in the HKSAR; Hon Duncan Chiu, Member of the Legislative Council of the HKSAR; and Dr Rocky Cheng, CEO of Hong Kong Cyberport Management Company Limited. These esteemed visitors were warmly greeted by representatives from HKBU, including Professor Alex Wai, President and Vice-Chancellor; Professor Terence Lau, Interim Chief Innovation Officer; Professor Patrick Lau from Department of Sports and Health Sciences, and his team.
At the event, Professor Alex Wai and Professor Patrick Lau shared HKBU’s pioneering sports science project, Real-time Human Data Metrics, which monitors athletes’ health conditions using physiological sensors, whilst multi-location environmental conditions are also tracked in real-time to help safeguard athletes’ health and safety in sporting events. Going forward, HKBU will collaborate with relevant parties in Hong Kong and Guangdong Province to apply this technology in the upcoming 15th National Games of China later this year. Through these groundbreaking efforts, HKBU continues to lead the way in harnessing the potential of AI and interdisciplinary technologies.
The spotlight also turned to the success of HKBU’s "Journey to Excellence: HKBU in Paris" initiative during the Paris 2024 Olympics. This remarkable event highlighted HKBU’s innovative contributions to sports science and featured insightful sharing from notable speakers, including Mr Joël Bouzou, President of the World Olympians Association, and Ms Yang Yang, Vice-President of the World Anti-Doping Agency. Additionally, HKBU proudly showcased interdisciplinary innovations in Chinese medicine, health tech, and art tech to support the development of sports.
